Let’s take a look at a roundup of gorgeous mahjong tile ideas, design inspiration, and everything you need to know before choosing the perfect tiles. And some favorite mahjong tiles will be linked at the end of this post.
What Is Mahjong?

Mahjong is a fun social tile game using racks, a mahjong card, and gorgeous tiles with the goal of making your tiles match one of the lines on the card. Played with 4 people, each person gets a hand of tiles (13 tiles), and you go around rotating trying to get tiles in the same suit. The first one to win says “mahjong!”, then game over, and play again! This game is about logic, strategy and a bit of luck!
Mahjong has become quite the trend- booming in popularity in recent years. However the game of Mahjong has been around for quite some time.

In fact, Mahjong is an ancient Chinese tile game that was brought over in the 1920s and then transitioned into the American version.
A few quick similarities and differences between Chinese Mahjong and American Mahjong:
- Both play with tiles
- American mahjong plays with racks and sometimes pushers
- Chinese mahjong does not play with racks because their tiles are thick enough to stand on their own
- American mahjong tiles have numbers and words on them
- Chinese mahjong tiles don’t have numbers, rather characters in a certain count
- American mahjong plays with cards from the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL)
- Chinese mahjong does not play with cards, rather players pick their own hands
What Are Mahjong Tiles? Why Are They So Special?
Not only are mahjong tiles the key pieces of the game of mahjong, but they can be truly a work of art! Their gorgeous designs and intricate detail make them a beautiful home decor addition and a statement piece in any game room.

Just like a deck of cards have a number and a suit, mahjong tiles work in a similar way. While the artwork on the tile can differ, there are different suits and symbols that carry across all sets of mahjong tiles.
There are 3 suits in mahjong: Bam (short for bamboo), typically represented in a green color (green dragon), with numbers 1-9. The second suit is Crak, which is typically represented in a red color (red dragon), with numbers 1-9. The next suit is Dot, typically represented in a white color (white dragon), with numbers 1-9. There are 4 of each tile in a suit, for example, there are four 1 Bams, there are four 8 Craks, etc.

The Winds are North, East, West, and South (NEWS), and these tiles do not have a suit. There are 4 norths, 4 easts, 4 wests, and 4 souths.
The Flowers are mahjong tiles that do not need to match. And Jokers can be used as any tile as long as it’s in a group of 3 or more tiles placed together. The Joker is essentially a wild tile.
Note: In American mahjong, there are 152 tiles used, if you’re following the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules. So you’ll want to make sure you buy a set with the correct number of mahjong tiles! Some mahjong sets come with extra tiles, so you will simply pull out the extra blank mahjong tiles and extra joker tiles to keep in line with the NMJL rules (if you choose to follow).
If a set comes with 160 mahjong tiles, this is typically how the tiles are divided up:
- 160 Acrylic Tiles
- 1–9 Bams, Cracks (or Craks), and Dots (4 of each) = 108
- N, E, W, S (4 of each) = 16
- Red, Green, and White Dragons (4 of each) = 12
- Flowers = 8
- Jokers = 10
- Blanks = 6
When thinking of which mahjong tiles you’d like to buy, consider the mahjong mat you might be using to coordinate colors. How sweet is this bunny mahjong mat below:

Do I Need A Special Table To Play Mahjong?
In a nutshell, a mahjong table is a specialized game table used for playing the game of mahjong. It’s often a square table or round table, but typically small enough where 4 players can sit comfortably near each other on each side, and can easily reach the mahjong tiles. These game tables are usually between 35″x35″ and 42″x42″.

Can I use a regular game or card table as a mahjong tile? Absolutely! While a regular circular or square card table can be used, often mahjong tables may feature upgrades for playing the game such as a soft felt surface to protect the mahjong tiles (and table) and to reduce noise, drawers for built-in storage for mahjong pieces, etc. However, these features are not necessary to have a perfectly suitable mahjong playing space. A simple table of the right size will do!
And because the game of mahjong has become SO popular, they’ve come out with the prettiest game tables to accompany the beautiful mahjong sets! So not only are these tables functional, they can easily become a favorite furniture piece in your home!
