As winter days turn dark and cold, and hibernation is at its peak, there’s something so refreshing about bringing a bit of nature inside and displaying a beautiful winter floral arrangement! The garden is long-forgotten (and missed!), but flowers and foliage can still be bought from the flower shop and arranged at home for a gorgeous winter floral centerpiece or a holiday floral arrangement for family and friends.

Where To Buy Flowers In Winter
Local flower shops are some of the best places to buy flowers in winter because floral arrangements are their specialty, and they always have an array of flowers in stock due to supplying floral arrangements/centerieces for events such as weddings or holiday events.
You may get lucky at your local market or grocery store when on the search for flowers during winter. I LOVE the selection at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. Their flower selection is beautiful, the flowers are affordable, and they often sell individual bunches of flowers (for example, one bunch of all white tulips) vs. pre-made arrangements, that make it easy to create a winter floral arrangement at home.
Choosing Your Flowers: Keep It Simple!
One of the most stunning and classic winter floral arrangements consists of just 2 colors: white and green. How simple! You really can’t go wrong with this combination. Reminiscent of snow falling on evergreens, there’s something so nostalgic yet refreshing about seeing a winter floral centerpiece with white flowers and green foliage.
Types Of White Flowers For A Winter Floral Arrangement
White Hyacinths
In my winter floral arrangement today, I kept it simple by adding 3 white hyacinths as my main “pop” of white. I love hyacinths because their scent is fantastic, they have a strong stem, and one stem boasts such a lovely, yet whimsical and bold floret display.
white hypericum berries
White hypericum berries are beautiful in a winter centerpiece. They are so unique as a berry, and their white/cream hues pop against their deep green foliage. They are informal, yet tightly-branched, and there is something about the look of the white berries that feels playful and happy!
White Hydrangeas
White hydrangeas are a great option for a white winter floral arrangement because one hydrangea goes a long way. Each stem is so large and full of beautiful white florets, that you quickly get a ton of “white” without much effort.
White Tulips
White tulips are some of my favorite white flowers to buy for winter arrangements. I’ve decorated many cakes for my winter birthday daughters with white tulips and it always looks so lovely! White tulips are great because they also have strong stems and are often sold as a beautiful bunch. Although they can be double-tulips or fringed, it is most common to find the traditional single tulips that are more upright and narrow.
White Ranunculus
White ranunculus are always such a stunning white flower choice! White ranunculus have a beautiful, yet whimsical feel, almost like a rose’s young and fun cousin (does that make sense?!).
White Roses
If you have the opportunity to find white English roses, get them! They always have the most lovely scents and they look stunning. Unfortunately, most grocery stores only carry one type of standard white rose that isn’t as exciting, but it can still look really nice in an arrangement.
White Paperwhites/Narcissus
The delicate, joyful florets of a narcissus/paperwhite is such a nice addition as a white winter floral addition. Paperwhites are fragrant daffodils that look so cheery against a backdrop of winter greens.
Types Of Green Foliage For A Winter Floral Arrangement
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is a beautiful green foliage choice for a winter floral arrangement because of its unique rounded leaf shape and silver-green hue. There are many kinds of Eucalyptus: silver dollar, seeded, gumdrop, baby blue, and more, and while they all look a bit different, they’re always a beautiful choice for a filler. Plus, Eucalyptus smells a bit wintery on its own!
Boxwood
Boxwood clippings are one of my favorite greens to put in any floral arrangement- they’re beautiful, they have the loveliest deep green hue, and their textural interest is amazing! Plus, if you grow boxwood in your garden, you can simply take some clippings to place in an arrangement as it’s one of the best evergreen shrubs.

Wintercreeper
While not all wintercreeper is fully green, some varieties such as White Album Wintercreeper are the most stunning deep green with white along the edges. Also a fan-favorite in the garden as an evergreen, it’s whimsical foliage structure looks great against a white floral arrangement.

Evergreen Clippings: Balsam Fir, Juniper, Cypress, and more!
Evergreen clippings are some of the best winter greens for a winter floral arrangement because you have so much flexibility, they hold their color and structure, and even in a frigid zone 5b Chicago suburb like ours you can pop outside and find something that works as an evergreen clipping! Think: balsam fir, juniper, cypress, a snip off the old Christmas tree- be creative!
More Tips And Tricks For A Winter Floral Arrangement
- Use evergreen clippings to really “fill up” a winter centerpiece- it can quickly go from a simple arrangement to a stunning winter centerpiece without much effort
- Odd numbers work well with flowers: for example, 3 white hyacinths and 5 white hypericum berry stems
- If you want to add some color to a winter floral arrangement, winterberries, red hypericum berries, or holly offer sweet pops of red (which can look nice with white!).
- Or another option is to add frosty blue juniper berries and mix them in with white flowers.
- Or another option is to mix apricot hypericum for a very soft and sweet color that still feels wintery when mixed with evergreen clippings and white flowers.
- If gifting a winter floral arrangement to a friend, wrap a gorgeous black velvet ribbon or a holiday plaid ribbon into a bow to have it feel classy and festive! (Here are some favorite ribbons for floral arrangements: thick black velvet ribbon, green & cream fringed chiffon ribbon, cotton red & cream stripe ribbon, green velvet ribbon, skinny hunter green ribbon, blue & green plaid ribbon, red plaid ribbon)
- Be creative! Play with heights and textures to see what feels right to you. Try spilling the winter greens over the edge, while keeping the flowers centered. Have a bold backdrop of evergreen clippings behind a bunch of white florals to help those whites really “pop”!
Give it a go, and I promise you’ll be happy you have a beautiful winter floral arrangement in the middle of a dreary winter! 🙂
