The Cutest Baby Halloween Costume Ideas

With Halloween quickly approaching, I’ve been on the search for the cutest baby Halloween costume ideas! With our oldest 5 kids, when they were babies, we’ve usually gone the adorable animal costume route- a baby shark (a 2-timer favorite), an owl, a black cat, and my little Game of Thrones sidekick, a baby dragon.

Well, our youngest will be 9 months old when Halloween rolls around, and I can’t believe it’s the last time I’ll be choosing a baby Halloween costume! (Can you hear me sobbing?!).

Honestly, the hardest part is just narrowing it down to a top pick because baby Halloween costumes are the absolute CUTEST.

From animals, to characters, to fresh produce, I’ve categorized the ultimate list of the cutest baby Halloween costume ideas for your little one!

Considerations For Baby Halloween Costumes

A few things to consider when choosing a Halloween costume for baby is what exact age/stage of babyhood he or she will be when the holiday rolls around.

Will they be a crawler? How cute would a baby turtle costume be for a crawler?!

Or will baby only be a newborn? Then consider a costume that’s knitted, soft and cozy like this knitted pineapple costume, or something that looks cute being held in your arms- like a football!

Are you planning on dressing up for Halloween as well? Maybe consider coordinating with your baby- you’ll be a witch, so baby will be the black cat!

Will you be wearing your baby in a baby carrier? Consider being the kangaroo and baby will be the baby kangaroo in a pouch!

Will baby be a “roller”? Maybe avoid a costume with a long bulky tail, or a head piece that will get in their face as they roll side to side.

But hey- if baby is just dressing up for a few photos and that’s it, then head piece and bulky tail it is!

Of course there are the usual suspects like Amazon and Target, but Pottery Barn Kids always has super cute baby costumes each year. One of our all-time favorite baby Halloween costumes was the shark costume from PBK that we used for our oldest, and then repeated with our 3rd when our older 2 insisted on being a “school of sharks”. Adorable.

If you’re looking for a sweet knitted costume or something more original, Etsy has some fantastic options.

2 years ago when our daughter was a baby, we needed a black cat costume to coordinate with her older sister dressing up as a witch. I found the sweetest little black cat ear headband and tail on Etsy- plus it’s great to support these small businesses and independent artists!

I’ve also been pleasantly surprised by the baby costumes found online at Carter’s. There usually isn’t a big selection, but their costumes have been very cute and usually made of a soft fleece material that’s cozy enough for baby. We’ve had luck with a baby owl costume from Carter’s as well as a firetruck costume.
