If you’re looking for a kid-friendly and fun way to decorate for Christmas this holiday season, consider one of theseΒ easy and fun Christmas tree themes for kids! Whether your little kids get to decorate their very own Christmas tree or you’re planning to display a small Christmas tree in their bedroom, having a Christmas tree themeΒ is such a sweet way to embrace the holiday spirit throughout your home.Β
Last year, my kids and I had so much fun shopping for Christmas ornaments that were perfect for our kids Christmas trees. If you’re new here- we have 6 young kids, 3 boys and 3 girls, and that’s also how their bedrooms are divided up- all 3 girls in one room and all 3 boys in the other. In addition to our main Christmas tree that we keep in our living room during the Christmas season, we gave both the girls bedroom and the boys bedroom their own tree in which they could decorate together.
Although their themed Christmas tree was more of the “girls tree” and the “boys tree”, we started thinking of all the fun themes that would be perfect for kids Christmas tree decorations.

Why You’ll Love a Kids Christmas Tree Theme
- A Sweet Tradition– Whether you use the same theme each year and bring out the same nostalgic Christmas tree ornaments, or you change up your themed trees for the following year, it’s a tradition that can make special lasting memories for the kids. One child might grow up loving his memories of his “vintage toy” themed tree he had in his bedroom, another might love her “fairy lights” themed tree that would sparkle as she fell asleep each night during the holiday season, and another might love recollecting the different themes they had each year on their small Christmas tree, “remember when I was 6 and I had the dinosaur theme tree?”. How special and sweet!
- Personalized– I love how Christmas tree themes for kids can be personalized to their interests. For example, a sporty kids would love a sports themed Christmas tree, as much as a budding astronaut would love little planet ornaments and rocket ship ornaments on a small space themed tree on their nightstand. And as their interests change over time, you can create a new theme each year! Plus, these cute Christmas decorations are such an easy way to add a personal touch to their room, too!
- Same Theme Or Different Themes- If you love to use the same theme each year, such as a winter woodland animal themed tree, that’s just as special as switching up themes each year. Maybe you have a big year coming up where it is your first family vacation taking an airplane, you can create a special vacation themed tree of airplane ornaments, and other ornaments that represent your destination such as mini palm tree ornaments, ski themed ornaments, or Disney castle ornaments. I really love this idea!
- DIY Christmas Tree Ornaments– If you’d like to be crafty this holiday season, or you’re looking for an inexpensive way to create a Christmas tree theme, then making DIY Christmas tree ornaments is a great way to be creative and save costs. Christmas tree crafts are endless to choose from, but if you’re looking to create a Christmas tree theme for kids, then using simple red and white pipe cleaners can create a candy canes themed tree, or using white pom poms or cotton balls to make homemade ornaments that look like clouds for an airplanes in the sky themed tree! Use colorful pom-poms to create a rainbow themed Christmas tree, or cardboard to create a gingerbread house themed Christmas tree. There are so many different ways to create DIY handmade ornaments that can be used for different Christmas tree themes, and it’s also a fun Christmas tree craft for kids as well! Consider other materials such as wrapping paper, wooden craft sticks, construction paper, clothes pins, or even simple printer paper (you can make a darling snowflake ornaments themed tree from only printer paper and scissors!). Kids LOVE art projects, so this can be a fun craft for little hands to practice their fine motor skills, and a great opportunity for younger children to get involved in their Christmas tree theme!Β
Tips For A Christmas Tree Theme For Kids
Whichever theme you choose, it might be more manageable to use smaller trees for a themed tree! If you want to go all out on a Christmas tree theme for kids and use a large tree, by all means go for it, but you’ll have to have the space for a larger tree, and enough ornaments to fill it. Plus, if you decide to switch your themes each year, then be prepared to buy (or make) lots and lots of new ornaments. (This could really make a big statement piece for the holiday though!). But if you want to keep things sweet and simple, then a small evergreen tree or faux tree is perfect. We’ve used a great faux Christmas tree from target for both the boys room and the girls room, and I even placed the faux tree in the sweetest light blue floral planter for my girls room.
A Christmas tree theme can be as specific as a “soccer theme tree” or as broad as a “girls room theme tree” (like we did! Our “girls room” themed tree consisted of all of the ornaments that represented our 3 daughters- from ballerina ornaments, to pink dinosaur ornaments, to pink basketball and football ornaments! And they simply adored it.)
You could also try doing a specific color scheme, for example, all blue ornaments, or your kids favorite colors, or even all sparkle ornaments- and stock up on ornaments that glitter and shine. I’ve seen the cutest small Christmas trees with a DIY glitter ornament theme that added the cutest little sparkle to a faux white Christmas tree in a little girl’s bedroom. Add some string lights and the tree will be truly magical for your little one.
Also don’t forget that Christmas lights and Christmas tree ribbons can really help “fill in” the empty space on a tree. You could easily have about 10 themed ornaments on a small tree, and fill in the rest of the space with ribbons and lights, and it’ll look lovely! There really isn’t a “right amount” of ornaments to use, but sometimes filling in the space can help make the tree feel more full.
If you have little ones that are at an age where they like to grab the ornaments and might be a little rough with the breakable ones, then opt for someΒ toddler-friendly materialsΒ such as felt or wood, vs breakable ornaments (or keep the decorated tree out of reach!).
