DIY Homemade Baby Wipe Solution: An Affordable Alternative
Some baby wipes, especially ones that claim to be more “natural” can be expensive. And baby wipes are not a short-lived phase. Let’s face it, baby wipes go well into the toddler years, especially when you have tricky-to-potty-train little ones. And then multiply that by how many babies you may have. You’ll be buying TONS of baby wipes over the years, so might as well save some money! Do your college savings account a favor and try this affordable homemade baby wipe solution– I promise it’s easy!
The specific cloth wipes I’ve used to make baby wipes over the years are actually the dry cloth wipes they use in the hospital for newborns. These wipes come in a folded rectangle sheet. So using one “sheet” is thicker (good for older babies/toddlers), but you really don’t need it that thick for a newborn, younger baby, or even just a pee diaper! So here’s a little trick to make wipes last longer and save you some money…
If you unfold the cloth, you’ll see that the folded crease creates 4 new rectangles (don’t get scared off by this math!):
Essentially, if you want to save even more money, then take the time to unfold the cloth, cut across the creases, and create 4 new rectangles. This will turn 1 wipe into 4 wipes. If you’re following here, you’ll realize you can create 4 times the amount of wipes that originally came in one pack! That’s a lot of cost savings!
Sure, it takes a little extra time to do, but if you stack the wipes unfolded and cut a few stacked wipes at a time, it’ll go by quicker. And if you’re trying to really cut costs, the extra time may be worth it!
Again, optional, but it is a great DIY mom hack to really save a lot of money on baby wipes.
A No-Diaper-Rash Solution: Baby Wipes With Coconut Oil
I’m very cautious to call myself a “pro” at anything, however, I’ve been making natural homemade baby wipes for over decade. And here I am in the newborn stage again, for my 6th time, so after making about a GAZILLION baby wipes, I’ll humbly admit: I’m a PRO at making baby wipes. And so is my husband. It’s that easy.
Not only is it super easy, I’ll also take a minute to brag that not one of our babies has ever had a diaper rash of any sort. I really believe that a big part in that little victory comes down to 2 things: 1) using more “natural” diapers and 2) using these homemade baby wipes. (But if your little one is prone to diaper rashes for other reasons- I’m sorry! But this magical cream has always helped in any dry skin or small cut areas: Organic Healing Balm – I swear by it!)
The main ingredient in my DIY baby wipe recipe (other than boiled water) is organic coconut oil. Coconut oil is a natural antibacterial for skin that can help prevent and help clear up skin infections, and it is extremely moisturizing. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil, such as lauric acid and capric acid, have antimicrobial properties that can help protect against harmful microorganisms. Which is why organic coconut oil is the perfect ingredient to protect and moisturize those little baby bottoms!
Ingredients For Homemade Baby Wipes
- Boiled Water
- Coconut Oil (Organic, Unrefined & Cold-Pressed)
- Natural Baby Body Wash (optional)
These natural homemade baby wipes consist of boiled water, organic coconut oil, and an optional natural baby body wash/shampoo. You really don’t even need the baby body wash, especially if you want to keep the ingredients super minimal (especially for newborns and younger babies). However, the added bit of body soap added to the mix gives an extra nice scent and extra cleanliness, great for younger toddlers.
How To Make Homemade Baby Wipes
I’ve seen many DIY baby wipe recipes that call for sawing up a paper towel roll or storing soaked paper towels in a large unsightly container, but one of my favorite things about these DIY baby wipes are that they fit perfectly into these simple, stylish, pop-up baby wipe dispensers.
I also love these baby wipes because the Medline cloth wipes are naturally so soft and gentle, and yet they’re much more durable than soaked paper towels.
Natural Homemade Baby Wipes Recipe:
- 1) Fill up a 2-cup glass measuring cup with water
- 2) Microwave the 2 cups of water for 2 minutes
- 3) Place the dry cloth wipes into this baby wipes dispenser (this is the one that I know fits great!)
- 4) When the water is done in the microwave, add a heaping spoonful (about 1-2 tablespoons) of coconut oil to the boiled water
- 5) Let the coconut oil dissolve into the boiled water, then stir well
- 6) Optional: Add just a couple drops of natural baby shampoo/body wash and stir well
- 7) Pour liquid mixture onto the dry wipes (see note for tip)
Helpful Notes:
- When pouring the liquid mixture onto the wipes, pouring in layers works best– lift up some of the wipes and pour liquid onto the bottom quarter of wipes, add wipes, now onto the bottom half, etc. This way the liquid mixture is evenly distributed amongst the layers of wipes.
- If the wipes dry out a bit over time, simply add a bit more boiled water..
- Wipes last for a few weeks.
- Optional: Clean out the wipe dispenser once all wipes are used (I just wash mine in the sink with natural dish soap), let dry, and then make a new set of wipes
- See how “oily” you like your wipes- if you prefer the wipes to be a bit more/less oily, just adjust the coconut oil amount for the next time (and again, make sure to stir well so the coconut oil is evenly dissolved into the boiled water)
- If you prefer to use a drop of organic essential oil, do your research to make sure what is safe for your baby.
