They have the perfect mix of being calming, cozy, pretty and timeless. From the way the bedding is layered, to the way they style pillows, from the gorgeous wallpaper, to the charming decor pieces on a bedside table, Serena and Lily has a special way of tying everything together.
While some Serena and Lily bedroom designs have a bolder style (especially during the holiday season where they incorporate richer hues), there is typically a softness in their colors, patterns, and textures that carries through, and yet a whimsical playfulness that comes out through patterned pillows, wallpaper, and artwork.
Whether you lean a bit more neutral in the bedroom, or prefer lovely pops of color, you can carry these Serena and Lily bedroom styling tips to design a bedroom perfect for your space.
Serena and Lily Bedroom Styling Tips
Lucky for you (and lucky for me!), I live near a Serena and Lily Design Shop- and what a fantastic place for interior design inspiration! I’ve been able to talk with design stylists and tour the shop more times that I can count, allowing me to bring you the tips, tricks and bedroom styling inspo you’re looking for.
These are the top ways to style a Serena and Lily Bedroom:

- Add lots of plush, beautiful pillows to the bed.
- Always have a decorative lumbar/bolster/throw pillow in front to top off the pillow display.
- Display pillows in 4 rows: (back to front) euro pillows, sleeping standard pillows, decorative standard pillows, and a decorative lumbar pillow / bolster pillow / throw pillow
Pillows, pillows, and more pillows! Serena and Lily does pillows right. They make every bed look like the most plush, coziest, comfiest bed by displaying rows and rows of pillows. Their pillows are typically in 4 rows: The euro pillows in the back, 2 rows of standard sized pillows (first the pillows for sleeping, then more decorative pillows in front), and a decorative lumbar pillows / bolster pillow / throw pillow placed in front.
There isn’t an exact science to it, but those 4 rows of pillows seem to be the standard layout for bed pillow styling.

4. A rattan wicker bed or headboard is effortlessly classic coastal.
A rattan headboard is such a classic coastal look, and it’s such an easy way to get that effortless Serena and Lily bed look. (While you can get the S&L rattan bed HERE, you could also get the look for less HERE!)

5. Embrace the coastal blues (and white).
While Serena and Lily does decorate with greens, neutral tans and creams, and even navy from time to time, their signature look is all about that coastal blue and white combo! You’ll see blue and white all over- from bedding, to pillow pairings, even little details like the trim or edging on a pillowcase or sofa. The combination of light blue and white is calming, beautiful, and timeless.

6. Add various textures and layers.
Serena and Lily bedrooms are all about layers of texture. In the picture above, you can see how beautifully the boucle bed, waffle weave euro pillows and bedding, linen sheet, and the embroidered pillow give so much coziness to this grouping of neutrals.

7. Embrace neutrals (and combine with color).
While you might think of coastal blue as the signature S&L color, neutrals (such as tan, beige, creams, and white) are often filling the space as the perfect backdrop for adding some color. A neutral bedding set looks lovely with a colorful wallpaper behind it, or with a colorful throw pillow.

And neutral pillows look gorgeous against a blue and white armchair or sofa!

8. Embrace the “light and airy” feel with a soft color palette, lots of white, subtle wallpaper or with an airy curtained canopy bed.

9. Add a tasteful pattern!
As in the signature S&L Priano pattern above showcased on the duvet cover, S&L brings playful pattern throughout the bedroom through bedding, pillows, and wallpaper. Nothing too bold and in-your-face, but rather a soft whimsy that feels fun, yet serene, all in one. (Similar and affordable light blue patterned bedding HERE).

10. Add sconces on both sides of the bed.
A favorite design element in the bedroom, I love the addition of beautiful sconces on both sides of the bed. The lighting is soft and intimate, the sconces look timeless, and it’s the perfect lighting source for reading in bed. (*Find my favorite S&L Lighting Looks-For-Less HERE!)

11. Add flowers to the nightstand, bedside table or dresser.
Adding florals to a bedside table or nightstand is not only lovely, but florals bring a natural element (and joy) to any space. You don’t always need fresh flowers- faux flowers can still make the space feel like you’re bringing a bit of the garden inside. Favorite faux flowers HERE, and budget-friendly faux flowers HERE.

12. Add a gorgeous mirror!
Adding a beautiful mirror to the bedroom adds so much to the space. Whether the mirror is faux bamboo, rattan, cane, or bone inlay, the S&L mirrors are stunning. (*Find lovely affordable mirrors HERE!)

13. Always ground the space with a beautiful rug.

14. When it comes to rugs, versatile neutrals or shades of light blue are always a win!

15. Go big with lighting by adding a fabulous pendant above the bed- S&L loves a good cream-colored, brass, or woven pendant whether that be Capiz shells or this lovely carved wood flora pendant

16. Don’t be too matchy-matchy with furniture.
This wood and linen canopy pairs beautifully with white nightstands. One design tip I love to embrace is to pair your bed with a different color for the nightstands, for example:
- a linen bed paired with wood nightstands (like this Shoppable Design Board HERE)
- a wicker bed paired with white nightstands
- a wood bed paired with linen nightstands

17. Bring in touches as if you’re hosting guests in a guest bedroom- such as this gorgeous raised bed tray for reading or serving breakfast in bed. (*Get the look-for-less bed tray HERE!)

18. Decorate your bedside tables with cozy intimate pieces like a beautiful framed memory, candles, and delicate florals (faux will do!)

19. Floral prints and patterns are always a favorite, even if they’re subtle and neutral.

20. Add a “seating area” in the bedroom.
Serena and Lily has this effortlessly welcoming touch to their bedrooms, and if you notice, there tends to be a “seating area” somewhere in the room. From a cozy bench or loveseat at the foot of the bed, a chaise in the corner for a cozy reading nook, or comfortable arm chairs with a small table for 2 to enjoy morning coffee or catch up on emails.

21. Blue and white stripes are always a classic.
Whether you lean toward whimsical prints or subtle classic whites and neutrals, adding in blue and white ticking stripes in bedding, furniture, or throw pillows is always a classic coastal touch.
(*Favorite Amazon blue and white stripe home finds HERE!)

22. Elevate your bedside nightstands with matching mirrors for lovely symmetry.

23. Add in a simple coastal touch like a sea shell on bedside books, an oyster plate on the wall, or an oyster dish for jewelry placed on top of a dresser. (*Coastal oyster bowl decor pieces for less HERE!)

How gorgeous is this hand-harvested seashell lamp!

24. Add a beautiful coffee table book on a bedroom side table, or keep your favorite novel out on your nightstand to set the mood for relaxation and reading (** Favorite coffee table books HERE!)

25. Serena and Lily is ALL about wallpaper! Wallpaper can elevate any bedroom. Think dainty florals, traditional prints, grasscloth, or coastal palm patterns. And, all of the Serena and Lily wallpaper options are gorgeous! (*Check out some reader favorite wallpaper posts HERE!)

26. A woven lamp or lamp shade is a classic S&L bedroom staple. (**Find affordable coastal lamps HERE!)

27. Artwork in soft blues, whites, and greens brings color, pattern, and interest to a bedroom wall. If you prefer a small piece of artwork, a bedroom bookshelf, dresser, or nightstand is the perfect place to showcase the piece.

28. Soft abstract landscapes bring a sense of calm to your space.

29. Embrace the grandmillennial faux bamboo style. From bamboo nightstands, mirrors, or dressers, these are always stunning! FB marketplace is also a good place to score a vintage faux bamboo piece. (* Here is a favorite faux bamboo nightstand at a more affordable price point!)
30. White nightstands make the bedroom feel light and airy. (And they look great paired with an upholstered bed or woven bed.)

31. Bring in pops of white decor- a beautiful catchall, a small white vase for flowers, or a white bone inlay jewelry box.
32. Add cane detail- whether that be a cane nightstand, headboard or even a pretty cane box for trinkets, jewelry, or storing iPads and phone chargers out of sight.

33. Woven frames are ALWAYS the easiest Serena and Lily style decor piece to bring into the bedroom that’s effortlessly classic coastal. (**Find my FAVORITE picture frames HERE! or Amazon frames HERE in my storefront!)

34. Bring in traditional design elements such as floral wallpaper, a decorative plate wall, and a vintage nautical art piece.

35. A canopy bed in your favorite whimsical fabric can make such a bold statement in the bedroom. Traditional floral prints are a favorite here.
36. If space allows, add a love seat or small sofa at the foot of the bed- this is such a cozy and inviting layout.

37. If adding a loveseat or small sofa to the bedroom, incorporate an upholstered ottoman for added comfort and a place to rest your feet after a long day. (** Less expensive and looks high end, I love this ottoman linked HERE!)

38. You can never go wrong with a traditional brass sconce.

39. If you prefer a moodier rich navy colored bedroom, balancing out the space with whites and neutrals can still pull off that Serena and Lily vibe.

40. Pair a patterned pillow with a bordered pillow in a coordinating color (** Learn ALL about perfect pillow combinations HERE!)

41. If you’d rather stick to whites and neutrals for the walls and furniture, adding in accents of light blue, navy or mossy green, (plus brass and woven/rattan items), will give you the perfect versatile and simplified formula for creating a Serena and Lily bedroom color scheme.

42. A light coastal blue bed is such a perfect color for a serene bedroom. (*Get the look for less light blue bed HERE!)

43. It may be obvious, but a S&L bedroom is always clutter-free, neat and tidy. The bedding is made nicely, bedside tables have just a few intentional decor pieces, and laundry is off the floor! Not only does a clutter-free bedroom look pretty, it instantly gives your mind a sense of peace, calm, and order.
